Engine Displacement Calculator
Calculate piston-engine displacement from bore, stroke and cylinder count, with results in liters, cubic centimeters and cubic inches.

V = π/4 × bore² × stroke × cylinders
Input definitions
- Bore: cylinder diameter in millimeters.
- Stroke: piston travel per cycle in millimeters.
- Cylinders: number of cylinders contributing to the piston displacement.
The formula calculates geometric swept volume. It does not account for unusual chamber geometry or rotary-engine displacement conventions.
Worked example
An 86 mm × 86 mm four-cylinder engine calculates to approximately 1.998 L, or about 1,998 cc.
Engineering notes
For an actual engine, bore and stroke should be measured rather than assumed from nominal specifications when precision matters. Bore wear, overbore machining and measurement tolerances can change the result.
